Park Theatre will welcome a host of celebrities as its Whodunnit [Unrehearsed] fundraiser shows return this spring.
The likes of Liz Carr, Michael Palin, David Suchet and Cathy Tyson will perform for the first time, while Gillian Anderson, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Bonneville, Emma Thompson, Sandi Toksvig, and Sir Ian McKellen will be making a return to the stage.
Whodunnit is one of the theatre’s best-loved recurring events, which sees actors improvise their way through comedic murder mysteries.
Jez Bond, Artistic Director at Park Theatre, tells East End Review: “Years before Park Theatre, I was toying around with this idea of, ‘Wouldn't it be funny if you had a group of actors in a play, and into the mix you threw one person who had never seen the script, was not rehearsed, didn't know what was going on, but actually knew all of their lines because they were getting fed them into their ear… and how could that work?’

“I felt this was going to be best as a comedy. It could be done straight, but it felt like you could mine a lot of comedy from it”.
The show has since had three successful runs and is coming up on its fourth. This year, audiences will step into Graveside, a Wild West streetscape complete with decor on the theatre’s exterior and The Last Chance Saloon, set up in the studio space Park90 and open to cabaret seat and Band A+ ticket holders.
The celebrity star will then enter the scene, unaware of what’s about to unfold, with the audience “all in on it”. “It's a real kind of experiential theatre, a super, super fun night out”, Bond adds.

Joining this year’s celebrity cast are a host of theatre stars including Iona Fraser of The Play That Goes Wrong and Dear Evan Hansen, Matthew Romain of Grapes of Wrath with the National Theatre, and Susanna Wolff - who appeared in the original Whodunnit and her one-woman show Totally Fine, also at Park Theatre - as ‘Meg Frencham’.
“We're also working with a community chorus of people who are non-professional actors, some of whom are part of our adult groups”, Bond continues.
Whodunnit is a vital fundraiser for Park Theatre, which does not receive regular public subsidy. Ticket sales from the production will support the running of the building, the development of new work, and the theatre’s community and education programmes.
